2020 Kitchen Remodel Trends

Stay at home orders have meant that we've all spent a lot of time recently, well, at home. And is it just me or does it feel like you've spent an incredibly large portion of that time in the kitchen?

If the lack of takeout and need to cook three meals a day, every day (not to mention all the snacks!) for yourself and your family has made you realize that your kitchen could definitely use a fresh new design for style or functionality, you've come to the right place. Every kitchen, of course, is unique, so always plan any redesign on what you like and what works best for you, your family, and your home, but if you're in need of a bit of kitchen redesign inspiration, here are ten kitchen trends for 2020 to get you started:

Dark Cabinets

White kitchens are quickly becoming a thing of the past and are being replaced with dark cabinets as well as bright, cheery splashes of color throughout, often both! When the two styles are paired together, you get a dramatic, luxurious feel that can't be achieved with the white and gray monotone kitchens of yesteryear.

Minimalistic

Simple, functional, understated. Homeowners these days are often opting for minimalistic kitchen spaces with clean lines, less cabinetry, and serious organizational space to leave countertops free so you can have a clean, uncluttered, stress-free area at home. If you opt for this redesign, don't think that simplistic means boring, though. Color and texture in cabinetry, countertops, and backspashes can still give your kitchen a warm, homey, feel.

Quartz Countertops

Although not a new trend, quartz countertops are still in style for both their beauty and functionality. Easy to clean, anti-microbial, strong, and sturdy, they are a great investment in such a high-traffic area of your home.

Custom Cabinetry for More Effective Storage

Although more expensive than pre-fabricated kitchen cabinets, custom cabinetry is a great home investment as it allows you to use your kitchen space the most effectively. Custom storage solutions can be added too, meaning the arguably most used room in your house can become the most efficient as well.

Ceramic Flooring

A close second to hardwood flooring is ceramic tiling in kitchens. Available in a range of colors and sizes, ceramic tiles can better match any design style you're aiming for and can easily add amazing character to your home. They're incredibly durable and extremely easy to clean, too, making them a practical home solution.

Multipurpose Kitchen Islands

Kitchen islands have always been popular in kitchens large enough to handle them, but they're taking on a new shape now to keep up with the efficiency trends sweeping home design this year. Added storage, built-in appliances, and integrated seating are all features you can expect to see on kitchen islands. Due to their needed extra size to accommodate it all, it's not uncommon, either, to have kitchen islands extend beyond the kitchen and encroach on family room or living room spaces in open plan houses.

Backsplashes

A must-do for any kitchen remodel is to add or update your backsplash. Go big, bold, and colorful. Crazy, unique designs that allow you to play with your personal style are not only acceptable in the interior design world, they're actively encouraged. Don't be afraid, either, to cover large portions of your kitchen walls with tiles. It's beautiful and artistic and it makes kitchen cleanup easier. What's not to love about that?

Indoor/Outdoor Living

Having a great outdoor living space is definitely a great investment for you home, and a great way to get there is by opening up your kitchen to your yard. Consider adding big picture windows to let in light and sun or add doors that lead from outdoors directly into your kitchen, a trend that not only creates the feel of a bigger, airy kitchen, but makes entertaining a breeze!

Colorful Kitchens

White, monotone kitchens are on their way out and bright, unapologetically bold kitchens are quickly becoming one of the hottest kitchen trends. Think blues, purples, and yellow kitchen walls, backsplashes, cabinetry, even appliances.

Metallics

Although an all-metal kitchen would be a cold, uninviting industrial space, adding some pops here and there make for a kitchen with wonderful personality. Think about adding a gold faucet, nickle drawer pulls, or steel light fixtures to your kitchen remodel plans. And in case you're wondering, yes, mixing metals is absolutely acceptable.

Kitchens are, without a doubt, the heart of the home. They deserve all the attention you can give them in terms of making it a warm, welcoming, and inviting space while still being practical, functional, and organized. Not an easy task, to be sure, but one that is achievable with the right design and the right contractor to implement it.
